You might not have heard about this yet, but it could change everything for your family.
The University of Chicago, one of the most elite and prestigious universities in the world, just made an announcement that most families haven’t seen yet. Starting in Autumn 2027, if your household earns under $250,000 a year, your child could attend UChicago completely tuition-free.

Let that sink for a moment

We’re talking about a university that consistently ranks among the top 5 in the nation. A school with Nobel Prize-winning faculty, a legendary economics department, and a reputation that opens doors on Wall Street, in medicine, in law, and in academia. And starting next year, it could be free for your family.
Here’s exactly what’s covered:

• Under $250,000/year income → Free tuition
• Under $125,000/year income → Free tuition + housing + meals + all fees
To put that in perspective, UChicago’s total cost of attendance is creeping toward $100,000 a year. That’s rent, food, tuition, books, all of it. For qualifying families, that number drops to zero. Or close to it.

Who Qualifies?

Families earning under $250,000/year with typical assets, you qualify for free tuition
Families earning under $125,000/year with typical assets, you qualify for free tuition, housing, meals, and fees
First-generation college students UChicago already provides First Phoenix Scholarships, paid internships, and mentorship on top of this aid
Rural and small-town students UChicago is the national headquarters of the STARS College Network, specifically designed to reach students from non-urban backgrounds
Veterans UChicago is ranked the top college for veterans in the country
Chicago Public School graduates the UChicago Promise program offers additional full-tuition scholarships for CPS and City Colleges graduates
Children of CPS educators, Chicago police, and firefighters also eligible for full-tuition scholarships under existing programs
Families with unusually high assets even at lower incomes may not qualify. The program is designed for families with “typical” assets like a primary home and modest savings.

The bottom line?

This isn’t just for low-income families. This is for teachers, nurses, small business owners, mid-level managers, and millions of everyday American households who always assumed a school like UChicago was simply out of reach financially.

So who actually qualifies?

For years, middle-class families have been stuck in an impossible gap, earning too much to qualify for traditional financial aid, but not nearly enough to comfortably write a $100,000 check every year. UChicago just blew that gap wide open.

Why is UChicago doing this?

The University isn’t alone in this movement. Harvard, Yale, Johns Hopkins, MIT, and the University of Pittsburgh have all recently raised their income thresholds for free or heavily subsidized tuition. Elite universities are facing growing pressure to justify their enormous endowments, reduce student debt, and attract talented students from all walks of life, not just the ultra-wealthy.

UChicago’s endowment is in the billions. This program is their way of putting that money to work for the families who need it most. As President Paul Alivisatos put it, the university’s core belief is that “costs should not prevent a student from joining UChicago’s community of extraordinary scholars.”

What about room, board, and fees?

If your family earns under $125,000, UChicago goes even further, covering not just tuition, but housing, meals, and university fees as well. For these families, attending one of the world’s great universities could genuinely cost next to nothing out of pocket.

What’s the catch?

There is one, and it’s a real one: you still have to get in. UChicago is one of the most selective universities in the country, admitting a small fraction of applicants each year. The academic bar is high, strong grades, rigorous coursework, and a genuine intellectual curiosity that comes through in every part of your application.

But here’s the thing, many families never even let their students apply to schools like UChicago because they assume it’s financially impossible. That assumption just became outdated. If your child has the talent and the drive, the financial barrier has been removed. The only question now is whether they’ll go for it.

What should you do right now?

Start the conversation at home. Talk to your student about UChicago, what it offers, what life in Chicago looks like, what kind of student thrives there. Visit their website, explore their programs, and look into the financial aid details. Applications for Fall 2027 will be opening, and this is one opportunity you don’t want to sleep on.
The cost of a world-class education just got a whole lot more manageable. The question is, will your family take advantage of it?
